The guttering on your home – an unsung hero
Be honest, how often do you really think about the guttering on your Coatbridge home? The likelihood is that is never crosses your mind until you have to dodge a waterfall at the front door when there is a heavy downpour of rain.
You promise every time that you will fix it or get it fixed, but as soon as the sun shines, the broken guttering is forgotten.
If your gutters are not performing well, there are all kinds of things that can happen;
- It becomes a nuisance – the idea behind guttering on your home is to quickly and efficiently channel rainwater away from your home. When it does this without any problems, it is ‘silent’ – in other words, we do not notice out guttering until it is no longer able to do this because it has split/broken or dropped off completely. When the gutters are not there to act as a channel, the water simply cascades off the roof and directly on to the ground. You can get an unwanted dousing by cold, wet rain as well as it being noisy.
- It then becomes an unsightly mess – fixing it at this point, stops the rest from happening but, not everyone is keen working at heights (if you have a two storey property, for example, or higher) and they also assume that to have it professionally repaired will leave them with a hefty bill. However, allow the rainwater to carry on dripping down the front of your property could leave you with unwelcome stains.
- It can lead to damp – gradually, over a period of time, the rainwater running down the same patch of wall will mean that it will start to seep through the outer protective layers, possibly causing a patch of damp on the interior wall.
- It can lead to foundation heave – the worst case scenarios is that if this is allowed to continue for years, the foundation of a property simply become sodden and when the ground dries, then becomes saturated again, it pushes the house up from underneath. This can lead to all kinds of expensive problems and issues.
