Roofline Glasgow provide a gutter replacement service to the Bearsden area.
The importance of guttering – that really works!
The rain is lashing down and you are desperate to leave the house but there is a fountain of rain water pouring out of the guttering on your property. Taking a few short steps to your car will leave you drenched; through gritted teeth you promise to call ‘someone soon to get it fixed’, but you forget. Again.
Months go by and the gutters seem to cope to lighter rain but then you start to notice a nasty damp patch growing in the corner of the front lounge at your property. On the outside, there is an unpleasant looking stain on the wall...
All this could have been prevented by having the guttering repaired or maintained!
To understand why keeping your gutters in a good state of repair on your property, we first need to understand the basics:
- What do gutters do?
Gutters are a mix of channels and pipes that swiftly and effectively remove rainwater from the outside of your property. Rain water that has chance to stand or accumulate on a property will slowly erode the fabric of the building over time.
Half pipes can be seen sitting just under the roof edge of your property, and these catch the rain water ‘drips’, channelling it away down the ‘down pipes, and into the sewers surrounding your property.
When these are blocked or leaked, they cause rainwater to spill over. As well as marking the outside wall, they can also cause damp inside your home; in extreme case, they can cause foundations to erode or shift.
- What types of gutters are there?
New build properties, as well as guttering systems where they have been replaced, tend to be made from plastic. This comes in a variety of colours to match or blend in as much as possible with the outside of your property. The system of guttering has changed little but will vary from house to house, simply as it needs to remove water as quickly as possible away from the structure of the property.
Cast iron gutters can still be seen on the outside of older properties and with a little care and attention will last for decades. They will regular upkeep with a particular type of pain that prevents both erosion and rust.
